The counties of Kent and Sussex, to the south of London, are some of the loveliest in the country and make the perfect destination for a day tour from London.
They are often overlooked by visitors, but it is here you will find the England of your imagination. There are pretty villages with their buildings made from local materials – weatherboarding, hanging tiles and decorative brickwork as well as timber-framed. There are market towns with historic churches and independent shops frequented by locals, not tourists.
You could visit picturesque moated castles, ruined abbeys, stately homes and world famous gardens such as Sissinghurst, or my favourite, the glorious Great Dixter. No wonder film-makers love the area! There is even an isolated church with stained glass windows by Marc Chagall.
En route we will drive along country lanes with overhanging trees and dappled sunlight (hopefully!), pass farms and orchards of apples and pears. The area is known as “the garden of England”.
You will find out how the hops were grown to make beer and see vineyards that make award-winning English wines. Lunch can be enjoyed in a traditional village pub serving local beers, cider and wine with food sourced from the local farms.
I will design a day tour from London which is customised to your interests and based on what is open and best to see at the time of year you visit.
For those who want to experience “real” England away from the tourists, this is the tour from London to book. This tour requires a car and driver which I can help you organise.
